About Me

MomAndRobertI’m the very lucky mother of 3 boys, wife of 1 wonderful man and owner of 2 pups, Cagney and Lacey. This blog became a reality when I decided to speak out against the ignorant and incendiary remarks about autism by radio “personality” Michael Savage.

Two of my boys (11-year-old twins) are at different places on the autism spectrum, so I’ve learned some hard lessons and have a lot of stories to tell. I hope my experiences help other families living with autism and that my writing will give a voice to people who may have felt they were alone. And I won’t hesitate to skewer those who deserve it, be they radio “personalities”, politicians, school districts or celebrities.

My philosophy on autism is simple. Acceptance. Awareness. Advocacy. My dream is that we as a society will stop seeing people with autism as simply a label or a grab-bag of behaviors and start seeing them for their uniqueness and their potential. Just the same kind of normal stuff every parent wants for their kid :) I don’t think that’s too much to ask, do you?

Peace.

  1. Hey there, trying to keep up on how things are going. I am sad to hear about whats going on for the kids and you in the school system. Drop me a message or call when you can to chat and catch up. I offer anything I can to help out, even from here. Take care and contact soon.

  2. Hi, Dan. Thanks so much for your note and sorry it took so long for this response. We are still looking at options here and missing the program in North Vancouver so much. There is just nothing here to compare. Certainly no inclusion and the middle schools are dreadful. If you saw the “autism program” here, you would be outraged, as I am. We’ve even discussed starting a charter school which is a huge endeavor, but even the private schools just don’t have the things we are looking for here. Could you re-send your email? I’d love to stay in touch. Also hope things are going well with the new center, tell me all about it!

    Take care!

    • Angie,

I’m not sure if you would remember me, but we had lunch one day in Edgemont Village just after we moved here from the States (our son is on the spectrum and we moved from SC). I tried calling you, but you must have moved since then, and it sounds like you are back in the States. I have a couple of suggestions for you, if you’d like them….just let me know.

      Take care,
      Karen
